Timothy Sexton

Timothy Sexton works as a freelance composer, conductor, arranger, singer, writer and adjudicator and over the last thirty years has become one of the most prominent musicians in South Australia. Timothy has composed more than 200 works, mostly for the theatre and choirs, including operas and musicals. He has worked with many of SA’s performing arts companies including the State Theatre, Jumbuck Theatre Company, Junction Theatre Company, Patch Theatre, Windmill Performing Arts and Slingsy Productions as well as producing work for OzOpera. His arrangements and compositions now feature on 20 commercial CD’s. He also recently composed the original film score for the South Australian feature movie The Marriage of Figaro.

As a conductor of musicals, Timothy’s credits include West Side Story, Mame, The Sentimental Bloke, Guys and Dolls, Finian’s Rainbow, Robert and Elizabeth and 42nd Street. Operatic conducting engagements include The Barber of Seville, Don Pasquale, The Mikado (Opera Australia and State Opera of SA), Riders to the Sea, Mavra, Treemonisha, Mahagonny Songspiel, Britten’s The Turn of the Screw, Philip Glass’ opera Akhnaten, Sweeney Todd, Elena Kats-Chernin’s Undertow (with which he toured Hungary and Finland) and the critically acclaimed productions of Glass’ Einstein on the Beach with the Adelaide Vocal Project and Leigh Warren and Dancers in 2004. He has gone on to conduct the Australian premieres of Glass’ Satyagraha and Mark Adamo’s Little Women. Other recent conducting credits include Gordon Kerry’s Ingkata for the 2008 Adelaide Festival of Arts and Monteverdi’s Orfeo, with director Lindy Hume. He was Associate Chorus Master for Wagner’s Gotterdammerung for the 2003 Perth Festival and Chorus Master and a Rehearsal Conductor for the 2004 Ring Cyclestaged in Adelaide. Timothy has been engaged as Associate Conductor for more than 50 State Opera productions, including the Glyndebourne Opera production of Flight for the 2006 Adelaide Festival of Arts and Golijov’s Ainadamar for the 2008 Adelaide Festival. Other credits include the State Opera of SA’s Studio productions of Mozart’s Bastien and Bastienne and Poulenc’s La Voix Humane, for which he created a special chamber orchestration, Astor Piazzolla’s Maria de Buenos Aires and Leoncavallo’s I Pagliacci.

As a singer he has performed in more than 30 productions for the State Opera of SA, as well as many solo concert performances. Solo performances have included roles in Rigoletto,SalomeThe Gypsy PrincessHansel and Gretel, The Masked Ball and Sid the Serpent as well as the bass solo in the Australian premiere of Nicholas Lenz’ Flamma Flamma and Chris Dench’s Symphony No. 4 ‘propriocepts’. In 2009, he sang the role of Jose Castro in Puccini’sThe Girl of the Golden West. Timothy also regularly performs popular and jazz repertoire as bass with the Adelaide Vocal Project.

As conductor, Timothy has led more than 800 predominantly choral concerts and more than 110 concerts and recordings for the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, including the SA premiere of Bernstein’s Mass and performances of the music of Steve Reich and Karl Jenkins. In January 2003 and 2004 Timothy conducted the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra in their Summer School performances. He has twice been a guest facilitator at the Australian Choral Conductors Education and Training (ACCET) conference in Melbourne and is in constant demand as a vocal judge and adjudicator.  He is also a two-time recipient of the Henry Krips Memorial Conducting Scholarship and in 2003 was awarded a Centenary Medal for Services to Music. In 2008, Timothy received the SA Premier’s Ruby Award for Sustained Contribution to the Arts by an Individual and was the 2009 SA Great South Australian of the Year in the Arts.

In late 2001 Timothy founded the Adelaide Art Orchestra and with them has performed with such Australian music luminaries as Glenn Shorrock, Catherine Lambert, Anthony Warlow, Judi Connelli, David Hobson, Julie Anthony, Doug Parkinson, Marina Prior, David Campbell, Tim Campbell, Rachael Beck, Christine Anu, Bernard Walz, Rob Guest, Kate Ceberano, Silvie Paladino, Rhonda Burchmore and James Morrison. Timothy is Music Director of the Adelaide Vocal Project having previously served as Music Director of the 100-voice Adelaide Philharmonia Chorus and the Corinthian Singers.  He is a regular national broadcaster with ABC Classic FM and also features on ABC 891 with his popular program Tunes with Tim.

Timothy creates most of the orchestral arrangements and orchestrations which are a feature of the Adelaide Art Orchestra’s repertoire.
